Summer mission recap
ICI Mission Trip 2014—A Blessed Trip
The ICI staff was great too. Tyrell kept us informed about the rules and expectations of the ICI ministry. The day camp coordinator, Dwayne, made it easy to stay excited and energetic with the kids.
Our favorite staff member was clearly the custodian, Thad. Thad is an older African American man who is physically challenged, works hard at speaking, and has a mind as sharp as a tack. He never complained or let his challenges slow him down, and we will all remember what a blessing he was.
Of course, the most rewarding blessing came through our interaction with the kids. Seeing them grasp truth from God’s word and respond well to our love and discipline was worth it all.
I was reading a missionary story to the kids during the lesson time. I had underestimated the amount of preparation needed to share this story 6 times a day with children from kindergarten to fifth grade, but God kept me focused and it was exciting to see the children respond and ask good questions.
This was also my first mission trip with my husband Duane. We were able to encourage each other about the challenges of the day and how we could do things better the next day. But really, the whole team was doing this all the time.
Other highlights include devotions together every morning, giving of dots to remind kids of the rules, staying up late to play games with our group, and tripping the facility’s security alarm twice (ask Crystal Dane or Eric Hammer).
Everything went smoothly. Our leaders were great: Rob Stewart, Jim Graves and Wally Metts. Michael Metts and Joseph Parker pitched in as well. And Crystal Dane and Lisa Ford kept us well-fed.
What a blessing to touch young lives in this way!
